But it has a good beat!

Posted by: mrmadden | 17 July 2008 |

What makes a song good?  Is it the lyrics?  Is it the melody?  For me, I can think of tons of songs that I don’t know the words to–you know, you end up singing, “Mm, hmm, ya, na, na, na, mm, hmm”–to fill in for the words that you actually don’t know because maybe you don’t understand just what the singer is saying.

So, here is an experiment, of sorts.  It struck me as I was driving home from Chicago the other day that I really like this song, Vidas Paraleles by Ximena Sarinana, but I don’t exactly know or understand the lyrics–mostly because the lyrics are in Spanish, and that makes it a bit tougher to decipher.

Take a listen, see what you think, and leave an honest answer about how you like or dislike this song.
Also, maybe give some examples of songs that you like, but you don’t know some or all of the lyrics.

I like the beat of Vidas Paralelas. I would be a really good song to make a dance to. Hmmm….
I like coldplay, The Killers, Imogen Heap and Linkin Park songs, but I can never seem to pick up on the lyrics without going to a lyric site.

I couldn’t find the song you were talking about. One song that I don’t quite understand the lyrics is the song Viva La Vida by Coldplay. I only make out what he is saying every five words.

p.s. Tess, if you read this we were in the same pre-school class. I was looking through my old school work and saw a picture of Mrs. Dart’s class.

To really tell you the truth, I do not like that song at all. I just have this weird thing about women singing. Even if they are literally one of the best singers in the world, I still wouldn’t ever listen to their music. I’m not trying to be mean what-so-ever. I wouldn’t even like my singing if I all of a sudden got a great voice. I just seriously have problems.

I listen to Rock. It could be Rock/Techno or Rock/Punk. Whatever it is that I’m listening to, though, is going to be Rock.
Right now, all I basically listen to is one band:
CUTE IS WHAT WE AIM FOR.
I have every single song by them (Delanie probably does too). I listen to them 24/7. Literally. No joke. I am right now in fact…and I know every single word that comes out of Shaant Hacikyan(the lead singer)’s mouth for each song.

Whenever I find a song that I think I might like, I make sure that I could be able to sing along with it. In my opinion, what’s the point of a song when you aren’t able to sing the whole thing by heart in the shower, or when there’s nothing else to do with friends, or even at 1:00 am when you can’t get to sleep? I really don’t listen to songs where the words are impossible to make out.

The lyrics are everything to me.

mr. madden- im not gunna lie, that songs kind of annoying( but we dont agree on music so this should be no surprise to you.) =]

just about every rap song a person cannot understand, so i find myself makig up words…. it works for me….

Right now I like the band Flyleaf my two favorite songs are I’m So Sick, and All Around Me. For me to like a song the “mood” of the song has to be what I am feeling at that week or it has to have a good beat/lyrics.

P.s.Delanie what was the school, because I remeber only 2 places where I went for pre-school.

I just knew that a posting about music would bring some strong responses!

So, is it true that we are all music snobs? You know, the music I like is somehow “better” or more sophisticated or cooler or whatever than the music that other people like?

I am not trying to insult here, I totally include myself under the “snob” heading. I am guilty of that occasionally.

At the same time, I certainly don’t want to get stuck listening to the same music as I get older (no comments, please), which is why some people like “classic rock” stations–as if someone can tell me just what is or isn’t “classic.” So, if I didn’t keep an open musical mind, I would still be listening to the Ramones, Clash, Meat Puppets, Minutemen, Eleventh Dream Day, Talking Heads, etc., all of which I love, but the music world doesn’t end, you know? I am always excited to listen for new sounds from new artists.

Does that make any sense to people?

Mr. Madden,

I see your point about the whole “don’t want to get stuck listening to the same music as I get older” thing. It’s good to keep an open mind about things. For right now though, I’m just going to stick to my kinda music. If I try to keep an open mind for different music styles at this point in time, I would basically end up forcing myself to like the music. My whole body goes KA-BOOM when I try to hide the truth to myself. It’s happened.

I’m a country chicka:)

I lovelovelove country. Plus anything that’s ever hit the stage on broadway, and all the new pop songs out on the radio.

But latley, I’ve been getting into more unknown bands.

My favorite new band is Mayday Parade. Jamie All Over is the best song recently:)

Haley,

I’m into the whole “unknown band” thing too. Anyone every heard of The Honorary Title, Tokio Hotel, Armor For Sleep, VHS Or Beta, We Are Scientists, or American Bang? I also like Cute Is What We Aim For (all-time favorite) and Cobra Starship, but I’m pretty sure they are getting more popular than they used to be.

I’ll be singing along to a song several times throughout a month or so, and then six months to a year later I finally hear it on the radio. By then I usually don’t like the song anymore. I get irritated very much by this! I’ve ended up not listening to the radio anymore.

Tess, it was Mary Poppins Preschool i think

I found two bands that I like over the weekend-Muse and +44. +44 I really like the lyrics and Muse I cant really tell what they are saying but they have a really good beat. I really like their songs Hysteria and Time is running out.
-Becca

All right, Kaitlyn raises a good question for me: Where do you people most often find new music? Radio? Friends? iTunes? Internet or Internet radio? By accident? Television?

-Mr. M

I usually find music by my friends and family and in one case Stephenie Meyer. Sometimes I find songs on the radio but most of the time the radio plays songs over and over and it annoys me so much that I usually dont listen to the radio. I mostly go on this website, playlist.com, and listen to playlists of songs that I like, and you can paste the playlists you make onto different sites, and its free too.

Another thing about what Kaitlyn said, is on the radio, they play THE worst songs imaginable. And they over play them. I mean for the first couple runs, I like, them, but then, every time I go to that station, it is that certain song that is playing.

When I am in the car with my dad, he normally listen to the student staion with no commercial breaks,(88.9 FM) and that station is where a lot of artist break out. I remember one of the songs about this guy and his facial hair. I haven’t heard it anywhere else, but I might soon.

p.s I am all for Cute Is What We Aim For

I wrote about how I usually find music a couple days ago. Something went wrong. Everything that I wrote was erased. I was so mad and too tired to write it all again (being that it was like 12:00am). It’s not exactly still fresh in my mind, so I’m just going to give the basics.

-I go to Mtv’s and vh1’s web pages and find new artists/videos. The ones I end up liking never become popular.

-I go to a band’s website and see who they are or will be touring with. That’s how I found out about CUTE IS WHAT WE AIM FOR!!

-I go to a band’s myspace page and view their top friends. It’s usually filled with bands even I’ve never heard of. I then can listen to a few of their songs. I’ve found many many many bands seeking fame that way.

I think that’s all I wrote about before. My first comment was a lot better, but what can ya do?

Kaitlyn S.

I’ll usually find bands I like through my Myspace friend’s profile songs.

And then I’ll go and download a bunch of their songs…

I mostly find a lot of songs through my friends. They’ll be lisening to a song I like but I haven’t heard of and then I’ll go and download it off of itunes
