Twilight Time

Posted by: mrmadden | 10 June 2008 |

Quick post–I have not yet taken time to consider what this summer break thing is all about.

I did not know if Twilight fans had read this yet, but below is a link to a Time magazine article (April 24, 2008) on Stephenie Meyer. It is a quick read, and interesting for its constant comparisons to J.K. Rowling.

I am especially interested in Twilight/Harry fan reactions, but, of course, I encourage each and every one of you to respond with a comment.

Twilight/Harry Potter
There’s nothing to compare. Twilight is the best book ever to be written, while the first Harry Potter book is the worst book I’ve ever read (I never went on to read further into the series). I was immediately compelled into Twilight. For the Potter book, all I remember thinking about it was: A-This book is extremely odd and very boring. B-When is this book going to end?! and C-What the heck! I am not reading any more Harry Potter books!

That basically sums up my total thought process on this particular topic.

Kaitlyn S.

I, Delanie O. promise to NEVER, EVER read Harry Potter books…..Now that’s out of the way, I have infact seen that article before. I mean it was a while ago, but it was familiarAny news from or on S. Meyer…I am sure to read it.

Delanie O.
p.s sorry I haven’t ‘blogged’ in a while, I turned into this lazy person…..Actually I haven’t but it’s a good excuse for what actually happened. It’s kinda gross, so I don’t think anybody wants to know….Okay, way off topic…Toodles!!!

Whoa! How did you get that picture there???? I like it!

^^^
This does not please me.

Gosh, you guys Harry Potter is a really good book I don;t know what you guys are talking about. I think that article had an unfair comparison becasue both authours live in different countrys and different countrys have different views. I think that Harry Potter and Twilight are both good books but if I had to pick I would pick Harry Potter, it is more in depth and I like all of the plot changes. I exspecially like how some of the spells and the names were taken from latin. Did you guys know that Voldemort’s name is taken from Latin for “Flight” and from “Death” I think that is cool because that is what he trys to do with all of his horocruxes.

Tess

Tess,

In my opinion, where you live doesn’t affect how you view things or what books you like to read. Both Stephenie Meyer books and the Harry Potter books are read around the world, which shows that it doesn’t matter where you live for you to have interest in certain kinds of books. To add to that, the Twilight saga has more depth than the HP series will ever have (in my opinion). The HP series has like a -11 amount of depth. I literally cannot breathe 99.24568617% of the time that I am reading one of the Twilight books.

Kaitlyn S.

Kaitlyn I didn’t said where you live when you read it I said where you are when you wrote it. I don’t think Twilight is a bad book but then again I am not going out at midnight to go and get it I did that for Harry Potter and that was about it. I don’t like Twilight as much as Harry Potter because I don’t that it is as in depth as Harry Potter.

Tess

Kaitlyn and Tess,

What do you each mean by “depth”? I am merely curious.

Are there other book fans out there that don’t list eitherTwilight OR Harry Potter as their personal number one?

-Mr. M

By depth I mean the amount of more information you can pick up the second time you read it and how much foreshadowing there is. I don’t actually mean foreshadowing but in boook 1 of HP there is an eagle flying over the castle on the night Dumbledore mystriously disappears. Most people beileve that the bird is Voldemort’s bird bringing the letter. Also another thing I see as depth is how some of the characters names and some of the places are linked to words describing there personality. Like Severus Snape, Severus sounds like severe which is what Snape is.

Tess

Tess,

The kind of book that someone likes to read would affect the kind of book that they would write, if they were to write a book. That’s the point that I was trying to get to before. If I were to write a book right now, it would be a romance novel. Even though you, or my next door neighbor, live near me at this very moment, that doesn’t mean that we all would want to write the same kind of book.

Mr. Madden,

When I say “depth,” I’m talking about several things. A book with depth has a strong meaning. The meaning is made up of many intriguing and important events that make the book a book. An event could be one sentence long, but make your heart jump one, or more beats. Depth is the book’s vibe and the characters’ feelings all squeezed into one emotional roller coaster ride. There could be so many details and things happening in a story at the same time. With depth, it all makes sense.

Kaitlyn S.

Kaitlyn and Tess,

Thanks for answering my querie about depth. Wow, your 8th ELA person will have her hands full with you two.

I have been gone for a week on Lake Independence in the upper peninsula, which is a reason why there has been no new anything on the blog.

Enough of that. New posting either later today or Monday morning at the very latest.

I do want to know how everyone’s summer season is going.

-Mr. M

I have nothing to say on the Harry Potter or Twilight discussion, but I do have to say that I made an amazing book discovery. It is called ‘Vampire Acadamy’. Yes, I know it sounds cheesy, but you can never judge a book by it’s cover….or title.

Here is the Author website!

Mr. Madden, I think you should tell us how to change the little picture by our name…

lanie

Delanie,

You are right. Let me research this so that I can supply an accurate answer. Top of my head, I believe that you will need to create an avatar of your own-you know, a picture, a drawing, or, better yet, a Voki!

Check out http://www.voki.com and see if there are any Vokis that capture your personality. Thousands of people use Vokis as a means to avoid putting in an actual picture of themselves, plus they’re a bit of fun.

-Mr. M

But then how does it get to the blog?

Before I read Twilight, Harry Potter was my favourite book series. But after I read New Moon, I had to read the Harry Potter series again just to make sure that I would still like having the entire Harry Potter display in my room. I did that and realised that they are both really good series and that I couldnt choose a favourite, though Twilight was almost moving ahead of Harry Potter on my favourite book list. I still like Harry Potter, but Twilight seems a little more appropriate for a twelve year old girl.

I am reading a book that Abbie B. lended me, Wicked:Witch by Nancy Holder, and right now, at the place that I’m at, it is right below Harry Potter and Twilight.

Becca

No matter what you guys say Harry Potter still comes 1st in my Favorite books I think that the Twilight series is in like 4th place right now The Gatekeepers series and the Lightning Thief series are ahead of Twilight. I think that they have more “depth” than Twilight because you can

A: realte to them in outsides subjects (Gate Science and Witchery) and (Lightning Greek Mythology) I like the little tidbits of stuff I remenber from sci and ss class becasue it makes the book more fun to read.

B: I can kind of imageine what the world would be like if those books were real. In Twilight you cant really do that at all.

Tess

Tess,

I feel the exact opposite. Let’s leave it at that. I’m done.

Sounds good to me.

Tess

i hate twilight.
/dont yell at me for saying that.
i know that everybody sooo into that book. but that theme of thebook just doesnt catch my eye.
someone will probally yell at me. but thats ok.
i have my own taste in books.
i like the harry potter books!
i rad the first 4 books!

Twilight is my all time favorite book! I’m so glad that I gave in and started reading Twilight….just to see if I’d like it, and before I knew it, I was reading Twilight for hours and I couldn’t seem to put the book down!
I can’t say I hate the HP books because I haven’t read them, but they just don’t catch my eye. I am not interested in the movies either, so I will not be seeing the newest movie…
I just wanted to say that the reason why I think so many people love Twilight is because it has so much of everything. It has romance, fantasy, mystery, etc.
I think that for anyone who hasn’t read the first Twilight book, at least you should definately give it a try. At least read the first few chapters! Then, maybe, you’ll be like me where I thought I wouldn’t like it and then I ended up loving it!
Or, if you would rather not read the book, at least see the movie (December 12, 2008). I mean, it might be a little bit different from the book, but you might end up watching the movie and soon enough, you’ll end up reading the book!

~Hannah

People, people, I say we let the twilight movie decide which is better. Harry potter books were kinda, eh, but i dont care what anyone says we all went to go see the movies. Twilight books were great, and if the movie is just as good, twilight wins. If the movie is bad, then i say harry potter and twilight are tied……..

Wait! Jessi! We can NOT judge the books based on the movies becasue the movies do NOTreflect the quality of the book. In the Harry Potter movies they left out so much that when the movies come around they will have to fill in areas with stuff that wasn’t in the book.

Tess

Mr. Madden,

I haven’t been reading much this summer so I didn’t finish Twilight until today. I know, I should have been reading earlier in the summer!
But, I did finish Twilight! It was absolutely the best book ever!

I like how you think Hannah!

Go Twilight!!
Kaitlyn S.

Now I’m reading New Moon. I’m close to getting half way done with it. The only bad part was getting the book. We had to drive all the way to Traverse CIty (right now I’m in Elk Rapids) and I probably should have gotten Eclipse while I was there…

Ok. Random question: How many of you guya are going to the Twilight party at midnight so you guys can get it at 12:01 intead of going the nextday??
Tess

I’m not, but I really want to!!!!!

Hey Mr. Madden! I finally sat down and read Twilight and New Moon and Eclipse in 3 days! Man they were so good! I hope the movie is good but normaly the movies are only based on the book so I dont know how I will respond to the movie.
P.S. I think that I Illusionisted myslef out!

I’m not going to the midnight party because im going to be at Blue Lake Camp grr… but I really want to go.
Becca

So, how was the Twilight Party? For anyone who went!

Hey I was kind of skeptic about the whole party but I talked to a couple of my friends and they said it was ok. I still can’t see waiting in line for a book that isn’t in my top 3 of books.

Tess

Well earlier in the summer I was up in Traverse City. I went to a book store there and they were asking everyone if we wanted to reserve Breaking Dawn. They were saying they were going to have a huge Twilight party there, and they wanted everyone in the book store to come, but since I wouldn’t be up in Traverse City that long, I said no. I wonder if there party was anything like the one in Lansing.
