Yeah, yeah, I know that we have all heard that life is not fair. I think that the first time I heard it was from my mother when I was complaining about life not being fair because I should be able to stay up and watch reruns of The Twilight Zone just like all my other siblings–six brothers and sisters.
Today in my English classes, I had the students do a journal entry: What is the most unfair thing that you experience in your life? We talked briefly about how at their age a lot of kids are beginning to want to be taken more seriously by adults, especially their parents, especially when it comes to increased independence. The students that shared their entries–which were awesome–spoke mostly about family struggles–divorce, separation, older siblings moving out, extended family; some spoke of unfair practices at school; driving restrictions, and the like.
Most of the kids really got into the writing of their entry, and I believe that this is due to the fact that this is something that is beginning to loom large in their lives.
You folks know exactly what I am talking about here, yes? So, knowing what fantastic writers you are, and knowing as well that many of you have very strong opinions about what is fair or not in life, how would you answer my JE for today? What is something that you find blatently unfair in your life? Now, of course I will give you the same caveat–caution–that I gave them: A sound and logical complaint with support and linked to a solution will be seen as maturity. A complaint about wanting something just to have it can be viewed as whining. That is true if you are six or sixty-four.
So, what say you?
