All right. I keep seeing alumni in the halls, and the answer is “Really well,” to the question, “How is 7th grade going?” So, while I am overjoyed that things are going smoothly, I can only assume that you are thirsty for a challenge.

I am here to grant your wish! Here is the challenge, should you decide to accept it:

Write a sentence in which the first word is one letter long, the second word is two letters long, the third word is three letters long, I don’t really have to keep typing, do I? Good.

The sentence must make logical sense, AND, the subject must be food.

The longest sentence wins, and the winner gets my eternal admiration, and a nifty new pencil.

Are you up to the challenge? Are you who you claim to be? Are you hungry? Are you really that tall?

Alright so im at a slight disadvantage here, being the first comment, but im not looking for a challenge, jus that nifty pencil, so here it goes: I am the food lover, pizzas, waffles, cupcakes, doughnuts, watermelon, blackberrys. And thats my sentence, not very long, but oh well!

All right, Jessi!

An 11 word wonder!

We now have an official leader. I will run this contest until, um, Monday. Or, until someone hits 21 words in a sentence. Whichever comes first.

Mr. M

Argh! I tried and couldn’t think of any thing! Even if I did, don’t think That I would be able to beat Jessi. (I know that is not very confident, but it’s true)

Delanie

Hey, Mr Madden

Can you make a link to the MadwordsThen blog?

Hey, Delanie,

Did you mean MadWords Now? (Current 6th grade) Where do you want the link? I put one on the link list to the right.

This is MadWords Then, right? But I know that you knew that already. At least, I thought that I knew that you knew that…wait, I am confused. Delanie, help me out here.

Mr. M

Hey Mr. Madden,
It will be quite hard to beat Jessi but I will give it my best try. Hey I want that pencil. Well, here goes nothing.

I am the food great, cheese, oranges, crackers, pineapple, hamburgers, clementines, poisonberrys. Thas my sentence.

Haley S

Hey, Mr. Madden!

I have sentence started right now. I can stop right where I am and it would be a sentence. Could I put it on here and still be able to add onto it if I can?

Kaitlyn S.

Kaitlyn,

Why not!

Mr. M

Grr, i thought i would stay in the lead, but good sentence Haley ill be sure to think of some kind of food with 13 letters, u just wait!! The competition has officialy begun!

Currently, my sentence is 14 words long.
Here it is:

I am the teen that’s always chewing potatoes, asparagus, hamburgers, cauliflower, strawberries, pumpernickels, checkerberries.

That’s what I have so far!!
Kaitlyn S.
P.S. Pumpernickels are a kind of bread. Also, checkerberries are edible.

Mr Madden….

First off I would just like to say, ” Why do you always say SEVENTH GRADERS on your blog?!?!?!?!?”

Am I the only EIGHTH GRADER or something that comments your blogs?

*Ashley*

Ashley,

Apologies for the misnomer (error in naming). I will, in the future, refer to all graders as alumni (”former students” seems cold and impersonal).

Now, you said “First off,” what is the second thing you didn’t say?

Hmm…

-Mr. M

Ashley, what do you mean 8th grade?

Delanie

Madden- Alright so i have a word thats 15 letters long, do i have to add onto my last sentence with 13 and 14 letter words ( which i dont have) or can i post a comment with just my 15 letter word, and take the lead??!

Mr. Madden,

Are words that have a dash in the middle accepted for our sentences? It’s okay if they’re not, but I just wanted to make sure. I’ll just have to keep on looking. If so…you will be making my day!! I want that pencil soo bad!!

Kaitlyn S.

Jessi,

The winning sentence must follow the rule that says if your sentence has a 15-letter word, then it must have 14-letter word, 13-letter word, etc.

It’s not me, it’s those nasty rule police named “They.” (You know, that’s what “They” say.)

Kaitlyn,

Yes, if you are saying what I think you are saying, yes, hyphenated words are accepted as words. As in: x-ray, editor-in-chief, ex-teacher, 10-year-old, etc.

You guys are putting a lot of pressure on me about my pencil prize. I had better check to make sure that it does not disappoint!

-Mr. M

Oh darn you Kaitlyn!!! I thought I would stay in the lead with that one but since you can add on to your sentence, I think thats what I’ll do.

I am the food great, cheese, oranges, crackers, pineapple, hamburgers, clementines, poisonberrys, peanut-brittle, cherry-tomatoes, cheesey-potatoes.

I hope that kaitlyn can’t beat that one. If she does……………………… I’m doomed:(

Haley

Mr. M- i think i might jus have the winning sentence, so here it is: I am the food lover, pizzas, waffles, cupcakes, doughnuts, watermelon, blackberrys,apple-mustard, boysenberries, snickerdoodles, barley-vegetable, hypericumberries, tomatoes-on-the-vine, mushroom-tortellini. Alright my 18 word sentence, lets hope its a winner!

Here is my new and improved 18 word sentence:

I am the teen that’s always chewing potatoes, asparagus, hamburgers, cauliflower, strawberries, pumpernickels, checkerberries, orthophosphates, silicoaluminates, antipasto-on-a-stick, gumdrop-marshmallow.

Kaitlyn S.
P.S. Orthophosphates and silicoaluminates are both ingredients for foods.

Mr. m- what happens now, me and kaitlyn both have 18 word setences?

Jessi, Kaitlyn, and everyone following,

All right, I will set 7:00 PM tonight as the cut-off time for this contest!

If Kaitlyn and Jessi end up with a tie, they each get half a pencil. (”Hm, do I want the eraser end, or the pointy end?”)

No, a tie merits a pencil (and a hearty, “Nicely done!”), so each of you would get a MadWords pencil (although they don’t actually say “MadWords,” darn, should have thought of that.).

Good luck. (But luck is the residue of hard work, yes?)

-Mr. M

I have to win this! Here is my 19 word sentence:

I am the teen that’s always chewing potatoes, asparagus, hamburgers, cauliflower, strawberries, pumpernickels, checkerberries, orthophosphates, silicoaluminates, antipasto-on-a-stick, gumdrop-marshmallow, hazelnussomelellens.

Oh, hazelnussomelellens are a german style recipe for hazelnut omelets.

Kaitlyn S.

Oh darn. Well congrats to Jessi and Kaitlyn. You guys put up one heck of a good fight!!! That makes me mad, I wanted that new pencil.

~Haley~

P.S Are you going to have another challenge for us???

Here is my 21 word sentence:

I am the teen that’s always chewing potatoes, asparagus, hamburgers, cauliflower, strawberries, pumpernickels, checkerberries, orthophosphates, silicoaluminates, antipasto-on-a-stick, gumdrop-marshmallow, kartoffelpfannkuchen, gooseberry-cardamom-jam.

Kaitlyn S.
P.S. Kartoffelpfannkuchen is a german-style recipe for potato pancakes. Hopefully I win!!

madden- well its 7:03. I believe that means ill be seeing you tomorrow, ready to recieve my ( me and kaitlyns) reward.. that better be some pencil. : ]

Did I win with my 21 word sentence?!!!!!!

Kaitlyn S.

Kaitlyn and Jessi (and spectators):

Awesome! Not my best word choice of all time, but it’ll do.

You two, well, let’s just say that I am most impressed.

This was way more interesting to witness than I had first anticipated.

Oy! Well done!

I will have to scramble to have appropriate prizes on hand .

Wow!

-Mr. M

Delanie,

I mean that Mr. Madden always writes these blogs and says 7th graders…and i’m in eighth grade! So I was just letting him know!

*Ashley*

mr. madden- wait a minute, im confused because i swear that last time i checked kaitlyns comment had not been posted at 6 somethin and now it is with a 21 word sentence….whats up with that, or did i just see it wrong?

Mr. Madden,

I don’t know what I was gonna say after first off…..oh well!!!

*ASHLEY*

Mr. Madden,

Wait, I don’t get! How did both of us win if I have 21 words and Jessi only has 18. Am I not seeing her new sentence somehow or something. I’m really confused right now. How am I not understanding this?

Kaitlyn S.

All right, girls, I believe I have found a flaw in my system.

Here is the situation:

You both (Kaitlyn and Jessi) were posting back and forth, topping one another. However, because of the way the blog works (your comments don’t get published until I read them first–Internet safety issues), you each weren’t truly able to see each other’s comments (in real time) until I put them up on the blog.

So, when you two were posting your entries, it was well later that they actually appeared on the blog. So that, this evening when Kaitlyn added a couple of more words, it wasn’t published until after the 7 PM deadline, and Jessi (who could not see the new entry until after the deadline) was not given a chance to counter.

This was completely my fault. No one else could read and publish any one person’s comments except me.

I was blown away at the amount of effort and creativity put forth by all contestants, this caught me totally off-guard. Serves me right for underestimating you people.

Now that I have learned a bit about running a timed contest on the blog, I will adjust for the next one.

That leaves the big question about who won. I am not comfortable picking a winner between Kaitlyn and Jessi. I feel it unfair to deprive anyone with a chance to make a counter submission to the very end. Again, this was an error on my part. Definitely a learning experience for yours truly.

I know that both Kaitlyn and Jessi worked very hard to accomplish their amazing sentences. And they ARE amazing!

I also know, Kaitlyn and Jessi, that this decision most likely does not thrill either of you. I only hope that you accept my sincere apologies, a pencil prize, and my congratulations on a job extraordinarily well done.

-Mr. M

Wow.

I really think you should have another post up while your having these contests. If we choose not to participate we’re unable to post about current subjects and it gets a little stale.

Just my own opinion

WOW!!! Thats cool….great job girls!
