Music, that is. I cannot imagine a world where I am unable to turn on some music somewhere. I would go completely nuts. It would be like living in a house with no windows, and very little light, with stuffy air, and no cats. Yecch.
Now, I believe that all of us are music snobs to some degree. Most people seem to be drawn to a particular type of music. Some only listen to one or two kinds of tunes, while other people listen to all kinds of songs. My family, for example, when we get together for holidays or picnics or whatever, there is anything from the Gypsy Kings to Donna the Buffalo to Dixie Chicks to the blues, cajun, classical… Sometimes, a family member will be disgusted with the lameness of a particular cut, and decide to be the DJ and mess with the music in the middle of a song. This activity has been known to create hostility and arguing in the family. But arguing is in our blood, so it usually works itself out in the end with some sort of musical compromise.
Me? If I am in the kitchen cooking, or outside in the garage, I will listen to a jazz station on the radio, or choose a CD to play. I am planning on getting a dock for my iPod so that we can just plop it in and let it shuffle itself without having to mess around with greasy hands to change CDs or change the station.
Lately, I have been listening to a female singer named Feist. I quite like her voice, and the song lyrics are pretty good, too. I enjoy hearing new music, classic rock or oldies are okay once in a great while, but sometimes I feel stuck listening to songs I have heard hundreds of times over the years.
What about you people? I know from experience that most of you have very particular tastes in music. Who or what do you listen to? When do you listen the most? Why do you like certain types of singers/bands, but not others?
Be honest. Music carries a bit of peer pressure with it. Even now, I get people telling me what kind of music I should be listening to. What is cool, and what is lame. I tend to go my own way. Why listen to music that does not please me?
Variety (like Tabasco) is the spice of life. Or at least that’s what “they” say.
