Round and round and round we go…

I just finished reading an article about year-round schools. Part of me runs screaming into a mental abyss upon such a thought, and part of me really is intrigued by the idea. It’s one of those “Don’t knock it ’till you’ve tried it” deals, I suppose.

So, what if GLPS decided to go year-round with middle and high school? What do you think are the pros and cons (the good and the bad) of such a change. Would you beg your parents to move to another district to avoid the schedule? Or, would you be kind of excited about such a radical shift?

Think about it before you respond. There is more than meets the eye on this one.

Mr. Madden,

There are many pros and cons if GLPS decided to go year-round with middle and high school.

Pros:
Many students (like me) wouldn’t feel so bored during the day in the summer because we babysit our younger siblings. We would get longer winter and summer breaks. We would be able to spend time with friends that we barely see in the summer. Also, we could see our favorite teachers still, instead of losing them so quickly. Students wouldn’t come back to school with their brains washed out from playing (and not reading) all summer.

Cons:
Some students practically stay at their cottage all summer and might miss a lot of school. Others who don’t have cottages might miss school if they go on vacation elsewhere. All of us need a break from school sometimes, and the summer is when students take theirs. A lot of us will get sick of school really fast. It would be hard for everyone to adjust to such a thing. The students (like me) who have younger brothers and sisters that are in elementary school, would have to get a babysitter to take care of their sibling everyday. That can become very expensive.

Personally, I would like to try to go year-round. I always feel so dumb when I come to school on the first day of the new school year. But, we would have to get a babysitter for us. That would be pretty hard, though, since all of the people who are at a good age to babysit, would be in school. We’d have to some how find a college student that’s willing to babysit every week day. But other than that…I think it would be cool!!

I have to say that year-round school would kind of stink for me, but i can see how it would be good (if that makes sense.)

Pros: School would be more efficient because during the summer kids forget stuff and so teachers have to re-teach stuff when they should be moving on to more advanced stuff.
If our school breaks were different we would have spring break while other schools weren’t so therefore hotels would be less crowed and therefore i would hope less expensive. So maybe some families could stay longer.
After a while summer gets boring, so maybe if we had a shorter summer we would spend less time moping around with nothing to do.
Some kids actually read during the summer so if there was a shorter summer the kids that don’t reads would less stuff and the kids that do read would have less boring time in class that is wasted by re-teaching.
Also like Kaitlyn said if we like our teachers we would see them longer. The only problem I could see with that is that some kids might get stuck with a teacher they ‘dislike.’

Cons: In the summer is when most camps are open, like YMCA, Math&Science, Sports, and musical camps. If we had year-round school we would have less time to go to these camps.
If we switched and nobody else did it would be very hard to arrange time to visit out-of-state relatives and friends.

My personal opinion: I do not want to go totally year round, but i wouldn’t mind shorting summer a little bit as long as we get a longer winter break.

Well what i would like about having a year round school is you really wouldn’t forget that much information that you really need to know. But what i wouldn’t like about it would be the fact that all of my other friends from different school would be out of school for summer. So then i coouldn’t go on trips with them, because i would be at school. So really i wouldn’t mind it that much.

I think it would be a good idea to have year round school. But,…………. like what Kaitlyn said, people spend time at their cottages and go on vacation. I’m not sure though if it would mean we would finnish school earlier?! If so, I say go ahead and do it, what are we waiting for?!!
On the other side, school and school supplies would coast more, meaning, that some people won’t be abble to afford it……Then the government wil pay for then we will have to pay more on taxes…………………………..never mind I’m getting off track, int he long run, I think it would be a great idea!

Mr. Madden,

I think that year round school is a good idea, and a bad idea.

I think year round school is a good idea because when we are off for the summer, we let our brains go, and let our minds go rusty, so when we get back to school, we need to spend a few weeks going over what we learned the year before.

I also think year round school is a bad idea because the kids and the teachers’ need a break. Like Delanie said, some people go to cottages and things, also to summer homes, so if ye had year round school, those people wouldn’t be able to enjoy that time, even though we would get longer breaks, it won’t be the same.

That is my opinion on year round school.

Mr. Madden
I personally would like year-round school. I’m one of those kids that get board out of there wits during summer break. Also my friendsĀ  never e-mail me back or call. Another thing, you miss all of your acquaintances, You don’t know them well enough to invite them over (or you’re not allowed to) -Caitlin Z
P.S In your second sentence you should’ve switched “really is” to “is real;y.” It sounds better.
